We’re committed to doing our part to deliver a sustainable future. This commitment is realised by our business model which creates and delivers value for all our stakeholders through a sustainable approach to financial performance, the environment, ethics and our people.
Fundamental to our environmental approach is our business model which involves the acquisition of older industrial buildings and their recycling and reconfiguration. By extending the life of older buildings, we reduce the need for carbon intensive rebuilding projects and further building on non-brownfield sites. In turn, these sites are often rich in biodiversity and integrated into the surrounding landscape meaning that we avoid further building on greenfield land or needing to engage in land clearances or deforestation.
‘The greenest building is the one that already exists’ - Carl Elefante, former president of the American Institute of Architects.
The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) found that, by practical completion stage, 35% of the whole-life carbon of a typical office development will already have been emitted. As such, our business model of recycling and upgrading existing buildings avoids the release of large quantities of greenhouse gases and emissions caused by demolishing and replacing existing buildings.
Our sustainable business model also means we consider the impacts of the ways in which we operate on social and ethical considerations. Our approach to environmental sustainability minimises the impact of our sites on the communities in which we operate, with minimal disruption due to construction versus creating entirely new buildings, and our focus on fostering green spaces and biodiversity at our sites helps improve local ecology.
Operating with ethical considerations at the heart of everything we do also means we can attract and retain the best talent from the broadest possible range of backgrounds, as our staff can feel comfortable in the knowledge that their efforts contribute positively to the environments and communities local to our sites, not just to the business.
